Supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events |
Dramatic, amazing events occur, such as the appearance of ghosts, apparitions, and other supernatural creatures like giants, werewolves or vampires; or inanimate objects coming to life, levitation, doppelgangers, communicating with the dead, etc |
· Coraline walking through the door to the world of the Other Mother seemed to be an especial example of an inexplicable occurrence that certainly excited readers and brought an atmosphere of mystery, for the bricks had disappeared and Coraline could only initially perceive the darkness of the hallways on the other side (p.20): “Coraline walked through the door”.
· The expression “Something moved. It was little more than a shadow, and it scuttled down the darkened hall fast, like a little patch of night.” (p.8) added eeriness and to the already suspenseful atmosphere created by the tapping and the screeching of the birds. This further resulted in the reader becoming tense, as the atmosphere would by then had become one with large amounts of ominousness. Hence, the reader would be simultaneously preparing for an unpleasantly surprising happening that they would believe would occur consequently within the story.
· The set of events that occurred in the duration of Coraline’s stay in the Other Mother ’s world that involved certain animals either speaking, or singing in the most eerie manner, was quite peculiar and often startled the reader and created intense discomfort: “The rats began to sing, in high, whispery voices, ‘We have teeth and we have tails, we have tails, we have teeth. We were here before you fell, you will be here when we rise.’ (p.23)…”’Good afternoon’ said the cat.” (p.25)…”’Another one’ said the dog gloomily”(p.29).
· Another supernatural event that took place within the story was when the Other Mother imprisoned Coraline within the claustrophobic cupboard behind one of her mirrors, which enabled Coraline to interact with the ghosts of other children who were previously left in the cupboard and forgotten. The fact that Coraline could feel the coldness and sadness of the ghosts seemed to create an atmosphere of loss, sadness and misery, which resulted in the reader feeling pity for the ghosts: “She felt a cold hand touched her face, fingers running over it like the gentle beat of a moth’s wings.” (p.55)…”And as she fell asleep she thought she felt a ghost kiss her cheek, tenderly…” (p.59).
· It seemed quite obscure that Coraline’s toys seemed to be almost alive, for they seemed to know what was occurring around them, had feelings and could move by themselves: “The toys fluttered excitedly as she came in, as if they were pleased to see her, and a little tank rolled out of the toy box to greet her, its treads rolling over several other toys”(p.65)…”…tipped all the toys in it out on to the carpet, where they grumbled and stretched and wiggled awkwardly free of each other.”(p.65). Although most supernatural aspects of a story almost always seem to instantly create an unpleasant, this particular factor seemed to rather create an atmosphere of fun and excitement, for Coraline’s unique toys in the world of the Other Mother could move and had feelings, also causing the reader to become suddenly immersed in wonderment.
